Following Georgia's defeat in the 2008 Georgia-Russia War, the US has made a concerted effort to rebuild, reequip and retrain the Georgian Defense Forces.

Part of this effort is an exercise, with the Georgian Army's reconstituted Mechanized Brigade, that has been ongoing near Batumi. The US Army participants include B company, 1st Attack Battalion, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade and an infantry company.

Additionally, the US has been delivering planeloads of military supplies and equipment at Tbilisi International Airport.

The US-Georgian military exercise has drawn only diplomatic protests from Moscow and South Ossetia. However, South Ossetia officials have warned of "dire consequences" if the arms shipments are not immediately discontinued.

Until recently, there was no way that South Ossetia could have forcibly stopped the US flights into Tbilisi. That changed two days ago when a Smerch MRLS battery was sighted entering South Ossetia from Russia. Subsequent press reports in Moscow indicate the Smerch battery has been transferred to the Armed Forces of South Ossetia.

Intelligence has followed MRLS unit as it traveled south and has identified two possible launch positions where the SMERCH can range the Tbilisi airport.

With C-17 flights inbound to Tbilisi, the threat of these rockets must be eliminated.
