Mimi Jung, a familiar face to many, has graced our screens here in the 425 for nearly 25 years, instilling trust in many who rely on her for their morning news.

Jung grew up in Puyallup and was bitten by the journalism bug when she was a junior in high school. After being interviewed by a reporter about a teachers strike and students who had the day off, Jung was not only enamored by seeing herself represented on TV, but also was charmed by the aspect of storytelling that the reporter had crafted. After this encounter, Jung’s path was set, and she hasn’t looked back since. After attending college at Syracuse University for broadcast journalism, Jung got her start reporting in Las Vegas for a few years before returning to her home state in 2000. She worked as a reporter for KING 5, eventually making the switch to the morning show for the flexibility it provided to be around for her daughters and their schooling needs.

Over the years working for KING 5, Jung has covered numerous stories, even traveling to Italy to cover high-profile events, such as the 2006 Olympic Winter Games. While a highlight for some people might be traveling to another country, for Jung, getting to know the families of local athletes was the best part of the experience, and the successes of her community members are what stick with her to this day. Often covering sometimes-difficult topics, she said telling the stories of locals and their triumphs are some of the greatest awards for her.

While her job can be high stress at times and requires a lot of energy from someone who is on-air at 4:30 a.m., Jung is an expert when it comes to a work/life balance that benefits her mental and physical health. A self-taught photographer and avid fan of naps and mental health walks, also find her reading a book that might be for work or just her own personal research as a mom of two young teens.

Jung is a role model in all respects whose dedication to her work, community, and family is admirable, with a smile always ready — even for someone who wakes up so early. — DV
