Video Description
~~~~~~
Good afternoon, everyone, and welcome to another edition of the Android News Byte.
Today, I wanted to highlight a new patent from Google that has been published which details some technology that would allow the displays on smartphones to be less power hungry.
Screen Power Draw
While most people tend to get excited about the power efficiency upgrades of hardware like the CPU and GPU, the screen is actually one of the biggest causes of battery drain. You could make your battery last 20-30 percent longer by just lowering it to a more appropriate level while you're indoors with proper lighting.
Things do become more conservative with OLED panels that are displaying black pixels. . .or just darker colors in general. But few people actually go out of the way to optimize for these things.
So Google has been working on a new idea that could help to prolong the battery of your future Pixel smartphone.
And if they choose to license it out, it could be introduced into other mobile hardware as well.
Dynamic Power Saving
The patent details a method they're calling Dynamic Power-Saving Mechanisms for Displaying an Image
In this example, the phone would recognize that you're looking at an image on the screen.
It would then use on-device AI to determine which part of the image is important
and then lower the screen brightness of any display pixels that are outside of the focus area.
You can see from this example image here.
The phone has said this part of the image is what needs to be highlighted
And then the surrounding area will have a lower screen brightness value.
It's unclear how often this power-saving technology would be activated. But the focus seems to be when you're looking at an image.
conclusion
Features in patents like this may never end up seeing the light of day in consumer hardware
But it does show that Google thinks it could be useful.
I think the fact that they've been sticking with the Adaptive Brightness feature for so long shows that they recognize we can save a lot of battery life by reducing the brightness of our display.
And this could take things a step further for many people.
This could be implemented in smartphones, tablets, laptops, smartwatches as well as AR and VR glasses.
So we'll have to wait and see if Google thinks it can work in practice.
