Journey back in time to Vigan Heritage City & its Cathedral [Northern Churches and Sites of PH Ep 3]

Hello everyone, I’m Joel Syquia and welcome to my series on Northern Churches and Sites of the Philippines, where I ride for 5 days from Manila to the Ilocos region with my friends BY and George to explore 5 churches and other interesting sites up north.

In this episode, we finally arrive at the UNESCO Heritage City of Vigan. Established in the 16th century, Vigan is the best-preserved example of a planned Spanish colonial town in Asia. It is also my family’s hometown. We stayed at Hotel Vigan de Veneto, which is owned by my uncle Benedicto Verzosa and is itself a historical place. We explored various interesting sites like Calle Crisologo, Plaza Salcedo, Plaza Burgos and even a homegrown craft brewery. The road to Vigan is also lined with interesting sites. Finally, I visited Vigan Cathedral (Metropolitan Cathedral of the Conversion of St. Paul the Apostle), which is part of Vigan’s UNESCO World Heritage Site Declaration, and explored its very own rich history.

We certainly enjoyed passing through Vigan’s iconic cobblestoned streets, whether on foot, by Calesa or by motorbike.
