Fifteen car-and-caravan combos battled their way around a half-soaked 500-meter concrete circuit. This event, known for its caravan kamikaze antics, drew a crowd of roughly 500 spectators, despite the brisk, bone-chilling weather. It was the inaugural Caravan British Grand Prix, hosted at the West Sussex raceway, as the previous caravan racing venue had shut its doors.

Caravans may be built to endure as cozy holiday homes, but only a few withstood the bumps and bruises of those initial laps. Grid positions had been decided through two preliminary heats.

Before hitting the track with their caravans in tow, the drivers had painstakingly stripped them of all interior amenities, like cookers and cupboards.

To clinch the title, competitors had to finish the 10-lap race still towing their caravan or, in some cases, just the skeletal trailer that once held a caravan.

The first few laps turned into a demolition derby as the recognizable structures of the caravans quickly vanished, leaving only cars hauling the metal frames of their trailers. Eventually, a massive pile-up ensued, and after a restart, a victor emerged: none other than Piers Bruton, the fearless No.100 from Bognor Regis in West Sussex.

Piers was over the moon and utterly astonished by his triumph. Beyond the gleaming trophy, he earned bragging rights and the immense satisfaction of knowing he'd reduced a vehicle that most other drivers despise to rubble.
