Descanso, CA — Monday, February 9, 2026 - 9:03 p.m.Viejas Blvd & Merigan Fire Road

A motorcyclist was killed Monday night following a crash in the Descanso area after failing to yield during an attempted traffic stop, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP said the incident began when a motorcycle rider was observed tailgating a California State Parks vehicle near Viejas Boulevard and Merigan Fire Road. A State Parks officer then got behind the motorcyclist and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The rider failed to yield.

Investigators said the rider later lost control of the motorcycle, crashed through a fence, and was ejected into a grassy field.

The State Parks officer immediately began life-saving measures, including CPR, until paramedics arrived. Despite those efforts, the rider was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The rider was described as a Hispanic male in his 40s and a San Diego resident.

Multiple agencies responded, including California State Parks, CAL FIRE, and the Medical Examiner.

CHP’s MAIT responded to conduct a full investigation into the circumstances of the crash.

The roadway was closed for several hours while investigators worked the scene

The incident remains under investigation. Information was confirmed by a CHP sergeant at the scene.
