The CW is a dual-rotor contra-rotating impact mill designed for dry grinding and coating soft to medium-hard materials. The feed material is charged to the centre of two counter-rotating pin discs and is comminuted by impact against the grinding pins. The high shear velocity of the counter-rotating discs permits a particularly intensive stressing of the particles. After passing through the grinding zone, the product enters the mill housing and is discharged from the mill by gravity. The rotation generates an air flow from which the end product is extracted in a filter. The fineness is set by adjusting the speed of the two rotors and the feed rate.

Bei der Contraplex handelt es sich um eine Feinprallmühle mit zwei angetriebenen Stiftscheiben. Bei gegenläufigem Betrieb sind wesentlich höhere Relativgeschwindigkeiten möglich.
Die Feinheitsverstellung erfolgt durch Änderung der Stiftscheibendrehzahlen. Die an beiden Scheiben wirkenden Fliehkräfte sorgen dafür, dass auch feuchte, fettige und klebrige Produkte verarbeitet werden können. Die Ausführung mit Weitkammergehäuse ist für die Verarbeitung dieser kritischen Produkte besonders gut geeignet. Häufig versprödet man das Aufgabegut durch intensive Vermischung mit Flüssigstickstoff.
