Japan Issues Warning Flares as Joint Fleet of Chinese and Russian Warships Sails Near Its Coasts

For the first time ever, Japan was forced to fire warning flares after Chinese and Russian warships were spotted near its coast during a large military exercise. The ships were spotted sailing near Hokkaido and later a Russian aircraft entered Japanese airspace, prompting Japan to send fighter jets in response. The military drills are a major step to showcase cooperation between Russia and China, to challenge U.S. and its allies in the region. But, China has downplayed the drills, calling them routine exercise.
