The word library in every language means a place of books, yet new libraries are multimedia centers and community event centers. In an attempt to stay current, they’ve strayed from the original purpose of a library, to be a “temple of books.” The oldest libraries in recorded history are dated to approximately 2600 BC, with most ancient civilizations documenting their records, history, and literature in some form of writing. In Medieval Europe, monks guarded their precious hand-copied books by chaining them up and inscribing curses inside the covers. Centuries later, Benjamin Franklin founded the first library in America.

In the Life and Tradition section of The Epoch Times is an article about three literary works honoring marriage. Tiffany Brannan analyzes “David Copperfield,” “Pride and Prejudice,” and “The Letters of J. R. R. Tolkien.” These works can best be appreciated as real books, not digital copies. Reading hard copies of books reminds us of the importance of real things in an increasingly digital world. Books are a vital way to stay connected to mankind’s past and the present.
