What, is an Encounter…actually?

What is an "Encounter" in Tabletop Role-Playing? How much are we asked to play our role and make choices, and how much is it forced upon us? Why Do people hate "Random Encounters?"

The CGA reaches to grow as a Dungeon Master and understand the roots of the hobby. AD&D 1E and 2E sources are consulted directly. A lot of experience and recollections of past campaigns as a player and DM are reflected upon. Jokes.
