Amidst the recent diplomatic tensions between India and Canada, there are reports coming in that US president Joe Biden discussed the alleged killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Delhi G20 Summit. According to The Financial Times, not only President Biden but also other world leaders expressed their concerns regarding the alleged murder.
Starting this week, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made an emergency statement to the House of Commons, in which he asserted that there are ""credible allegations of a potential link"" between agents of the Indian government and the killing of the prominent Sikh leader and Khalistani figure, Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Despite the escalating tensions between India and Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Thursday again said that there are ""credible reasons"" to suspect India's involvement in the killing of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, but he once again did not provide concrete evidence. However, the Canadian Prime Minister emphasized that he is not seeking to provoke India and noted that he had already communicated his concerns about the issue to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
According to a report by The Financial Times, members of the Five Eyes alliance, which includes the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Canada, have engaged in direct discussions with Prime Minister Modi on this matter.
Canadian officials have highlighted that the assertion regarding India's 'potential' involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar is based on intelligence provided by the Five Eyes alliance. The FT report additionally reveals that after a request from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, President Biden had a direct conversation with Prime Minister Modi on this issue.
In the midst of these developments, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan stated on Thursday that Washington and New Delhi are maintaining communication at the 'highest level' following Ottawa's assertions concerning Nijjar's murder. Sullivan also emphasized that the United States is not giving India any 'special exemption' in this matter.
India has rejected Canada's claims and described them as 'absurd.' In a press briefing on Thursday, India's Ministry of External Affairs stated that Canada did not provide any specific details regarding Nijjar's murder.
Earlier on Thursday, as the diplomatic standoff escalated, India declared the suspension of visa services for Canadians. Additionally, Ottawa was requested to 'readjust' the staff levels at Canadian missions throughout India. India has characterized Trudeau's allegations as 'politically motivated.' During the briefing, the Ministry of External Affairs also referred to Canada as a 'safe haven' for terrorists.
