Description: Heading out on a routine hub-to-hub flight from Detroit to Salt Lake. The departure was uneventful but picturesque, with clear skies and golden hour lighting. After taking off to the south, we made a few turns to eventually head west towards our destination and climbed to our initial cruise altitude of FL300 (30,000 ft). Our route first took us over Lake Michigan, Chicago, and the Midwest plains. As we passed over Omaha, we climbed up to FL320 (32,000 ft).

The sun started setting as we flew over western Nebraska. Shortly after crossing into Colorado, we found ourselves in a layer of clouds and climbed to FL340 (34,000 ft) to get out of the turbulence. We skimmed the surface of the clouds as we watched the sunset, and after crossing the Colorado-Utah border, we began our descent. The clouds cleared just enough for us to get a view of the freshly snow-covered Wasatch Mountains before starting our approach.

Shortly after passing over Provo, we entered a dense layer of rainclouds, where we stayed for most of the approach. By the time we broke out of the clouds, it was dark and rainy, and we were just a few miles away from the airport. A minute or two later, we made a late, low-level turn to line up with Runway 35—which is offset from the airport’s other two main runways—and touched down, after exactly 3 ½ hours in the air. After landing, we made the long taxi in to our gate on the opposite end of the airport, where we arrived 12 minutes ahead of schedule.
