I push forward and Alwyn raises himself and gives the opening for the half guard. I try to close the distance immediately. The goal of the right arm grip is to prevent Alwyn from running away and get underneath him.

The prize is that he gets a cross face. It's not a problem by itself as long as I keep concave shoulders and keep myself small. The whole fight for half guard is pretty much who can be the smallest ball and who can control the inside space.

I get underneath and I initially control the underhook but Alwyn did a good job of pushing me away and trying to make distance again. This is a good reaction albeit very tiring for him. At this moment I already notice him starting breathing heavily so I know if I keep insisting that eventually I will win.
