STORYLINE:
Two New York police officers face manslaughter charges, and another faces a misdemeanour charge (reckless endangerment) for their roles in the 50-bullet fusillade that killed Sean Bell, an unarmed black man on his wedding day, according to a person familiar with the investigation.
The incident led to protests and accusations of racism against the New York Police Department, including one in New York on Saturday from Union Square to police headquarters.
A grand jury handed down the indictments against the three police officers after meeting for more than three months during which they analysed hundreds of pieces of evidence, including maps, hospital records, videotapes and toxicology reports.
"There should have been five indictments, not just three," said one protester, Nicholas Heyward. "We are tired of this system constantly walking over us not only one time by murdering us (but) by not allowing us to get justice four our children. We have to prosecute these cops for murder for Sean Bell and for all the rest of these victims."
The indictment is the first step in a process that will take months, probably leading to a lengthy trial, where proving criminal charges against on-duty officers may be no easy task.
A grand jury deliberated for about three days before deciding that three officers should be prosecuted over the death of 23-year-old Bell, on 25 November 2006, as he left a bachelor party at a Queens nightclub.
The ill-fated groom was being followed by plainclothes police detectives who thought someone in his party had a gun. Five officers opened fire after one undercover policeman thought he glimpsed a weapon. Bell died and two of his friends, Trent Benefield, 23, and Joseph Guzman, 31, were wounded.
