Описание к видео Helping a Friend Overhaul His Car Interior

This week we help a friend to upgrade his interior and teach practical tool skills to the crew. This video documents the project, but also the learning experience of all involved.

When our friend Rodwell asked me how much I would charge to change out the seats in his Ford Explorer, I looked at the project and said the price would be to feed the crew that would be doing the work. I have many friends that are at various levels of being Mechanically Inclined. Some are just at the start of knowing how to use a wrench, others have some basic knowledge of tools but limited experience, some are full on mechanics that have decades of experience working on many different types and sizes of cars trucks and other equipment. The key here is that all of us learn from each other, and teach each other. This is How We Do It to help each other learn to become more mechanically inclined.

The project was to remove the seats and anything else that would work from this 2002 Ford Explorer and put them into this 2001 Ford Explorer. We put a limit of 4 hours for the project plus 1 hour for cleanup, this kept it from becoming a all night thrash, that is not the way to enjoy the learning process.

Of the project goals, we achieved the first 3 in the time allotted, the rest we decided wouldn't fit in the schedule or after we removed the seats, we found they were not really needed.
With Curtis leading the team on the 01 Explorer, I lead the team on the donor 02 Explorer. The first thing was to remove the front seats. There are only 4 bolts holding each of these seats in place, along with wires for the seatbelt sensor the power seat and others, even manual seats have some wires that need to be disconnected. The passenger seat was the same, even though it was only a manual seat.

he seats in the 01 Explorer were all manual but had all the wires for power seats in place, just different connectors. More on that later in this video. All of the bolt locations for the front seats were the same as the 02 Explorer as well. This made the exchange easier.
The 2nd row seats had a little more challenge to them. The 02 Explorer had a seat that had not only 3 individual folding seat backs, but the 2 side seats folded forward to access the rear area. The 01 had a simpler 60 40 back, and the bench seat blocked the rear cargo area. We wanted to make the front and 2nd row seats match, and these seats are more comfortable.
The 02 seats had more bolts and studs to remove because of the 3 individual seats. This design made it easier to access the bolts for the most part. Curtis the tall was trying to remove the one bolt that is a challenge to this design, and I showed him how nice it is to have ratcheting box wrenches.
The 01 had fewer bolts to remove, but they were in tighter locations and Marcos and Douglas got to see how to work under a seat. We later found that the seat can be folded up if you remove the front bolts first, these are things you learn as you work on a vehicle.

With all of the seats removed the drivers door panel was next and Curtis worked with Elis to remove the panels, then we cleaned up the one from the 02 changed the cloth insert to match the 01 interior and put it back together.
Doing this kind of swap involves more than just exchanging parts. All of the parts have age, wear and lots of junk that has been spilled on it. We found all kinds of stuff under these seats and in the carpet, this meant that we had to clean things as we removed them, then as we put them into their new home they got dirty and so we had to clean again after the project was done.
We also found that the seat wiring connector for the 01 was different than for the 02. No problem just swap the connectors with the seats. The best way to do this is with solder and shrink tubing. Butt connectors would also work, however I find that when you have access to power and have the time solder and shrink tube work the best. The 02 had no battery so cutting into the wiring was not a problem, for a working car disconnect the battery before cutting any wires or you may see fireworks.
The 2nd row seats mostly just bolted in. However the design of the seats meant that some of the bolts and studs would not be used for one and used on the other. Most of the locations were the same and they bolted in just fine after finding the attachment points and putting in the studs at the right places. Curtis used his E-torx sockets to transfer the studs from the 02 to the 01.
