Elijah's Challenge.

Elijah, a prophet of the Lord, challenged the prophets of Baal to a contest to prove who the true God was.

Elijah proposed that both he and the 450 prophets of Baal prepare a bull for sacrifice and place it on an altar, but they were not to set fire to it. Instead, they would each call upon their respective gods to send fire from heaven to consume the offering. The god who answered by fire would be acknowledged as the true God.

The prophets of Baal called upon their god from morning until noon, dancing and shouting, but there was no response. Elijah mocked them, suggesting that perhaps Baal was deep in thought, busy, or sleeping. Despite their frantic efforts, including self-mutilation, Baal did not answer.

Elijah then repaired the altar of the Lord, placed his sacrifice on it, and drenched it with water to make the miracle even more evident. He prayed to the Lord, asking Him to reveal Himself so that the people would know He is the true God. The Lord answered by sending fire from heaven, which consumed the offering, the wood, the stones, and even the water in the trench around the altar.

The people of Israel, witnessing this miracle, fell on their faces and declared, "The Lord, He is God!”
