Hello everyone,

In our previous episodes, Maddy (aka @Maddastic) showed us how to create a character from A to Z and how to give it more dimension with shadows and lights. The link to those videos is down below.

You might not realize it but, drawing the background of an illustration is one of the biggest yet important parts of an artwork. Your characters are not floating in a void (that’s unless, of course, they actually are). More often than not they belong to their own, unique universe that defined the way your characters evolved up until the point you drew them.

If you’ve seen our first lessons on character design, you know what the character’s backstory is the backbone of every line you draw. And if you have not, we strongly recommend you give it a read. You essentially need to ground your characters in a deeper story that meets the eye. From when they are born, to where they live, what job they have, up to what their favorite food is. Sounds overkill? For us, it sounds more like fun!

Watch the full video for Maddy's take on this challenge and a step-by-step guide on how she does it.

This video is part of a bigger series called Vectornator Design Tips, which is meant to help you become a better illustrator and designer. If this feels too advanced, check out our Academy video series which teaches you how to start working with vectors in our app.
