They are some of India’s most picturesque towns, sited along the Himalayan range. But now, the ground is sinking beneath them.

In January 2023, buildings in the important pilgrim town of Joshimath collapsed, causing thousands to flee their homes in the dead of night. In the aftermath, over 800 structures were found to have developed cracks, and many were condemned by the authorities. Poor construction practices and climate change have become an existential threat for Joshimath.

The plight of Joshimath has sounded the alarm bell for other settlements in similarly precarious positions. Will this spell doom for India’s mountain towns?
