Global Health and Development Student Webinar Series: 2021 Myanmar coup d'état – Impacts on the country’s healthcare and COVID-19 response

Synopsis

On February 1st 2021, the Myanmar military overthrew the country’s fragile democratic government in a coup d'état. This came at the worst time for a country already battling a steady rise in COVID-19 cases amid a seriously inadequate health system. Myanmar’s health system is extremely fragile due to its limited health spending, weak governance as well as its fragmented nature resulting from long-lasting internal conflicts. In response to the coup, almost all public sector medical workers from 245 townships across Myanmar began a civil disobedience movement saying that they would refuse to work under the new military junta. Within two weeks, the Myanmar public healthcare delivery system has totally stopped, including a mass COVID-19 vaccination programme which started just one day before the military coup.

In this webinar, two Myanmar scholars, Dr Hein Min Tun, Assistant Professor, and Dr. Phyu Phyu Thin Zaw, Lecturer, of the School of Public Health, will discuss the short-term and long-term consequences of the current military coup on Myanmar’s health system and its regional implications. Both Dr. Tun and Dr. Thin Zaw are teachers of the School’s pioneering BASc Global Health and Development (GHD) programme. This webinar will also explore how GHD graduates can contribute to global health crises that transcend national and professional boundaries.
