On 25 August 2000, a vehicle patrol of 11 soldiers of the Royal Irish Regiment and one Sierra Leonean soldier were captured by the West Side Boys, a faction of the Sierra Leone Civil War known for erratic behaviour and violence (seen in our recent Operation Palliser edit). Negotiations began in earnest, with members of the MET Police drafted in alongside a number of collaborative special forces should an offensive be required.

Negotiations bore some fruit, with five hostages released in exchange for a satellite phone on 31 August 2000. However, behind the scenes, belief in the negotiations had begun to wain as anecdotes of mock executions and increasingly erratic demands came in. After two weeks, Operation Barras was mounted by Special Forces. With no covert method of attack, Chinook, Lynx and Mil Mi-24 ‘Hind’ helicopters supported the SAS and 1st Battalion (Parachute Regiment) on the ground in Gberi Bana and in the nearby town of Magbeni. One memeber of the Royal Irish Regiment would be killed in the raid.

A swift and brutal gunfire assault with potential for heavy casualties, Operation Barras is considered one of the more daring military assaults of the Blair era, the success of which was later used to support arguments for military interventions in Iraq and Afghanistan.
