The celebration of the Wangala Festival marks the end of a period of toil, which brings good output of the fields. It also signifies the onset of winter. Also known as a 100 drums festival, Wangala Festival is the occasion when the tribals offer sacrifices to please their main deity Saljong - the Sun God.

In the Wangala dance, one performer—the nokma or village headman—acts as the priest. The men of the Garo tribe play the horn and lok drums, and the women make formations around the nokma in honour of the Misi-Saljong (also known as Pattigipa Ra'rongipa).


The dances performed during Wangala signify the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. However, music and dance is not all, the villagers also set up stalls to sell their local handicrafts during this time. Usually, two or three villages come together at one place to celebrate this festival.
