Hampstead was granted to the Benedictine monks of Westminster Abbey by charter in 986.

The first church begin in 1312 and in 1333 a Chapel was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

St Mary’s Church was founded by the Abbé Jean Jacques Morel (1766-1852), a refugee from the French Revolution.
