Описание к видео The Academic Book of the Future?

Much discussion of scholarly communication is dominated by scientific and (especially) serials concerns. This session aimed to redress the balance, with the recent HEFCE report from Professor Geoffrey Crossick on Monographs and Open Access and the current AHRC project on The Academic Book of the Future - natural starting points for an extended discussion of what still remains the major currency of both communication and esteem in many academic subjects in the humanities and social sciences. Simon Tanner presented the latest findings from the AHRC project and two senior academic representatives of learned societies, Professor Peter Mandler (President of the Royal Historical Society) and Professor John Holmwood (Past President of the British Sociological Association) continued and extended the discussion. They assessed the implications of Open Access for academic book publishing and examined important questions of credentialism, metrics, impact and the scholarly career, as well as the enduring significance and appeal in many scholarly sectors of printed books. Professors Mandler and Holmwood and Mr Fisher all served on the HEFCE Advisory Committee to the Crossick Report, and Simon Tanner is an Investigator for the current AHRC project.

The session was chaired by Richard Fisher from Something Understood Scholarly Communications, The Academic Book of the Future? and panellists included:

Professor Peter Mandler, University of Cambridge and President of the Royal Historical Society
Professor John Holmwood, University of Nottingham and Past President of the British Sociological Association
Simon Tanner, King’s College London and the AHRC Academic Book of the Future project
