Today's guitarist SHOULD have a complete understanding of all his equipment! Yet, many otherwise competent musicians are continually haunted by poor intonation, guitars that buzz, amps that hum, and many other common problems. There's more to "tuning" a guitar than just strings! And what you don't know WILL hurt you!

What would you think of a guy that bought a new Corvette, drove it everyday, but never once had the car tuned, or even changed the oil? Not too much, right? Yet, you'd probably be surprised at how many guitarists unknowingly commit similar "sins of neglect" against their favorite axe. And it's not their fault. No one ever bothered to tell them what to look out for! Even the least expensive Chevys come with a maintenance book! Yet a guitarist who spends as much as $1,500 on a new axe gets nothing besides the guitar itself.

And speaking of new guitars, don't think that just because a guitar you're considering buying is brand new and has a famous brand name on it, that it must be perfect. New means nothing. You can buy a $20,000 car and still get a lemon. Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting that there is a giant conspiracy among guitar manufacturers to rip you off. But I have worked in several music stores over the years, and I've seen what comes in. Maybe a carton was dropped during shipping, maybe the wood used in making the neck wasn't fully cured and it warped after leaving the factory. Perhaps the warehouse where the instruments were stored wasn't heated, and the crafted guitars sat in 25 degree weather from January to April. Possibly someone browsing in the store unknowingly damaged the instrument during an inspection of it. I've seen all these scenarios and more. The question is, "Would you be able to spot a defective instrument?" It's not likely that the salesperson would point it out. Again, what you don't know WILL hurt you.
