Leaves lanceolate, all up the stem, the upper ones wrinkled. Compare with Corn Marigold (which has fewer wider ray florets) and Elecampane which has narrower ray florets and much larger flowers. The leaves also differ.

A single brown stem mostly covered in white hairs branches only at the very top into flowering stems, a single flower atop each stem. Pulicaria are perennials with a preference for damp to marshy conditions. Growing to a height of around 50 to 90cm, they have hairy stems and lanceolate leaves with a wavy edge to them. The yellow flowers are short-lived appearing between August and September on long, thin stems. Flower heads are yellow and daisy-like, growing between 2 and 3 cm in width. Its curious scent, with hints of carbolic soap and chrysanthemum, is an insect repellent. In the past it was kept in houses specifically for the purpose of driving away fleas. Bunches were dried and burned as a fumigant or hung in rooms. To Gerard it was called Conyza, whilst the Konuza of Dioscorides, drove away midges in addition to fleas.
