Equally impressive is the location where the Phaeton was assembled. The Transparent Factory in Dresden, Germany, is a testament to engineering excellence. Although the plant primarily focused on final assembly, lacking stamping and painting capabilities, prepared bodies were delivered from off-site locations via the CarGoTrams, which traversed Dresden’s public transportation system. The factory’s design incorporates predominantly glass walls and Canadian maple floors, embodying the dual meaning of the German term “Gläserne Manufaktur,” which translates to both optical transparency and a transparent production process. While the factory ceased production of the Phaeton in 2016, it continues to be a hub for Volkswagen vehicle assembly, primarily the ID.3. Notably, the Phaeton’s production spanned from 2003 to 2016, while the North American market, not yet receptive to an upscale Volkswagen, only experienced availability from the 2004 to 2006 model years, characterized by minimal modifications and no facelifts. Our particular vehicle was assembled in April 2005.
