US Air Force planned for a missile which would travel at a Mach 5+ speed, the program is named High Speed Strike Weapon or the HSSW. The hypersonic missile will use the X-51 Waverider scramjet technology and missile planned to enter service in the mid-2020s. The X-51 Waverider is an unmanned aircraft for hypersonic flight at Mach 5 or 3,300 mph / 5,300 kmph at an altitude of 70,000 feet or 21,000 m for research purposes. The Boeing X-51 Waverider completed its first powered hypersonic flight on 26 May 2010. First two test flight was unsuccessful, but then X-51 completed a more than six minutes flight over Mach 5 and recorded as first longest duration hypersonic flight.

Waverider is generally that aircraft which take advantage of compression lift produced by their own shock waves. The X-51 Waverider program was a joint experimental program of the United States Air Force, DARPA, NASA, Boeing, and Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne. U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory’s or AFRL’s the Aerospace Systems Directorate was assigned to manage the program. In the 1990s, the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) began the HyTECH program for hypersonic propulsion.
For a hydrocarbon-fueled scramjet engine development, Pratt & Whitney received a contract from the AFRL, which led to the development of the SJX61 engine which was eventually canceled. After then the engine was applied to the AFRL's Scramjet Engine Demonstrator program in late 2003. The scramjet flight test vehicle was designated X-51 on 27 September 2005.
