Welcome to Alicante, a vibrant port city and the radiant heart of Spain's Costa Blanca. This is a city defined by the brilliant Mediterranean light, the golden sands of its beaches, and the watchful presence of the magnificent Santa Bárbara Castle, which has guarded its bay for over a thousand years. Founded by the Romans and later shaped by centuries of Moorish rule, Alicante has a rich and layered history. Its name itself is derived from the Arabic "Al-Laqant". Today, it is a bustling city of over 300,000 people, blending the charm of its historic old town, El Barrio, with the relaxed elegance of its seaside promenades and modern avenues.
For visitors, the currency is the Euro (€), and Spanish is the official language. The city is famous for its festivals, especially the explosive Bonfires of Saint John (Hogueras de San Juan) in June, and its delicious Valencian cuisine.
