This story is #7 in our Soar Into Summer reading program. "Teammates" is a unique selection for our summer reading book list. At first glance, this book may seem geared toward an older reader, but I think the subject matter can be shared with children of all ages, even if some of the vocabulary is unfamiliar.

The story is about how Jackie Robinson became the first black baseball player to play for the Major Leagues during an era of racism and discrimination. Robinson's teammate, Pee Wee Reese, stood by him and stood up for him despite the hatred and threats. This small gesture actually made a huge difference and was symbolic of the social changes to come. At it's core, that is what this book is about: doing the right thing, no matter how small, can make a significant and positive impact on the world.

Teammates was written by Peter Golenbock and illustrated by Paul Bacon.

Reading aloud is an important thing we can do to motivate and inspire young children to fall in love with reading - and literacy is one of the most important skills we can teach them.
