Will NBA Top Shot last & should you invest in NFT? NBA Top Shot has broke out into the scene this 2021, offering a whole new range of money making opportunities for collectors and investors! NBA Top Shot is just one application of Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) that run on the same blockchain technology that cryptocurrency runs on. When I first heard about it, I thought to myself "is the NBA making a new cryptocurrency with NBA Top Shot?" I had not known the application of blockchain technology outside cryptocurrency so I wasn't entirely sure what to make of this new development.

In a video several weeks back, I excited shared with you the unboxing of my first NBA Top Shot pack! While this was fun (especially since I got a Luka Doncic moment in this first pack), I didn't feel like I had enough experience to really discuss how NBA Top Shot should fit in to the context of overall investments. Progressing to now, a few months later has equipped me with more knowledge on this. I've opened a handful of NBA Top Shot packs and have also had a few transactions on the NBA Top Shot Marketplace where I've been both a buyer and seller of Moments. Getting NBA Top Shot packs are undoubtedly the best way to purchase Moments. Although completely random, I've been lucky enough to get NBA Top Shot Moments that I've been able to make money off of, easily returning the cost of packs five-fold!

So where should NBA Top Shot and NFTs as a whole fit into your investments? Let's dissect this a little bit. There are really two main areas on which we can build our investment strategy on. The first similar investment instrument would be cryptocurrency. When I first heard about NBA Top Shot, I thought that it would be a variation of cryptocurrency. In actuality, NBA Top Shot and NFTs do not trade and get valued in the same way that cryptocurrencies do. The similarity really ends with the enabling blockchain technology underneath that enable seamless transaction without the need to know or interface any other details of the buyer/seller. While trading cryptocurrency is generally linear and you can get into and out of your investment position in a fairly easy way by pricing your cryptocurrency at the current market rate, NBA Top Shot behaves quite differently. How each Moment gets valued is still really similar to the second obvious basis of comparison: NBA Cards. As with NBA Cards that I collected as a kid, the value of each basketball card differs. The performance and popularity of a player is of course of primary importance. The team's record, the league's viability, as well as both the players' and teams' accolades would factor into the value of each NBA Card. So each NBA card has had a different and this applies to each NBA Top Shot Moment as well versus the linear valuation of each cryptocurrency. The in-NBA factors are however just one side of the coin. More important in the valuation of NBA Top Shot Moments would be the scarcity and circulation of the said Moments. This is of course a factor as well with NBA Cards, but given the digital nature of NFTs, it seems that it is easier to produce or mint the said moments versus cards which has real tangible hurdles in terms of output and production. The rate that the guys behind NBA Top Shot are minting Moments are coming at blistering speeds and they have easily monetized the said opportunity. NBA Top Shot has been able to strategically plan out supply and build out demand, minting Moments of different criteria in terms of circulation. An unusual thing about NBA Top Shot would also be the emphasis on the low sequence of serial number over actual viability of a basketball player in terms of what gets valued more. If this seems confusing, I can't say I disagree with you. My point is, there are so many factors that go into the proper valuation of a Moment and if you are keen on making this a sound investment instrument, keep these in mind! Putting these complexities aside, I reached back and checked how my old NBA Cards from the 90s are worth now. I didn't have great cards but I definitely have decent ones. I've been surprised to know that my cards haven't grown in much value (if any). I honestly thought that any collectible that's almost 30-years old should have at least appreciated with SOME value!

With these, I have been some conclusions on how to strategically go about NFTs and NBA Top Shot as an investment. There is undoubtedly money to be made from this right now. I recommend that packs are bought but Moments quickly sold! This would be for the short and medium term. If you intend to go long on this, I suggest to only keep the best of the best, only the rarest! This holds true for traditional art and collectibles.
