As India and the European Union prepare to seal what leaders call the “mother of all trade deals,” the United States has fired a blunt warning. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has accused Europe of indirectly financing the Russia-Ukraine war by buying refined fuel from India that originates from Russian crude. While Washington has imposed steep tariffs on Indian goods for purchasing Russian oil, Europe is finalising a historic trade pact with New Delhi, exposing what India sees as a clear contradiction. The deal, nearly eighteen years in the making, promises massive market access, stronger supply chains and reduced dependence on China. For India, it is about strategic autonomy and economic growth, not geopolitics. As US pressure mounts, New Delhi is signalling it will engage all sides, protect its interests, and refuse to let global rivalries dictate its future.
