We set off to hike Mount Snowdon in winter conditions, expecting a cold but clear day in the mountains. Starting our climb around 10:30am, the weather looked promising blue skies breaking through, crisp air, and high spirits.

It was myself and Dotty, along with my nephews Luke and Fin, taking on one of Wales most iconic hikes.

As we climbed higher, things started to change.

We passed multiple hikers heading back down, some who had already summited, others who had been forced to turn around. Those who made it to the top warned us the summit was covered in deep snow and ice, and that spikes and ice axes were essential. Those who turned back told us straight- the conditions weren’t possible without proper winter gear.

We didn’t have the right equipment… but we kept going anyway.

Step by step, the snow got deeper. The temperature dropped. The wind picked up. Eventually, we reached the point where it was clear this was as far as we were going to get.

No summit. No hero ending. Just a smart decision to turn back.

On the way down, Luke decided to make things interesting with a very questionable skinny dip in a freezing mountain lake 😂
We ended the day the only way that made sense with a famous Betws-y-Coed pizza before the long two-hour drive home.
