This video shows moving red and green dots. Are the dots moving to the right or left? Are there more red or green dots? Stanford scientists used this four-second clip in an experiment designed to ascertain how the brain filters out irrelevant information when making decisions. Two monkeys were trained to view this clip and "answer" one of those questions. The monkeys replied by glancing to one side or the other. Brain recordings measured activity at the moment of decision. The scientists used those recordings to create a computer model so they could repeatedly simulate the decision-making process. This experiment, reported in the scientific journal Nature, led to a new hypothesis for how the brain, when asked about color, disregards irrelevant motion information, and vice versa.
