The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has announced a sweeping ban on high-concentration alcoholic drinks sold in sachets, a policy scheduled to take effect in January 2026. The decision, which will be enforced in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, and extended to local communities nationwide, is aimed at addressing rising concerns over alcohol abuse, particularly among minors and young adults.
NAFDAC officials say the move is a direct response to alarming trends showing increased consumption of cheap, high-strength alcoholic sachets that are widely available and easily accessible. Health experts warn that regular intake of these products poses serious risks, including addiction, liver and heart diseases, cancer, and severe mental health disorders—conditions that place heavy burdens on families, healthcare systems, and national productivity.
A key focus of the ban is the protection of vulnerable populations. Authorities link the widespread availability of sachet alcohol to a surge in alcohol-related road accidents, violent crimes, and health emergencies involving underage consumers and impaired drivers. By restricting access, NAFDAC hopes to reduce these incidents and promote safer, healthier communities.
Many residents have welcomed the policy. Abuja-based businessman Abdullahi Umar described the ban as timely and necessary, noting that high-strength alcohol directly undermines young people’s ambitions and decision-making. “It affects their future and what they can become,” he said, adding that the policy is grounded in research and deserves public support.
Public health advocate Akwedi Gregory also endorsed the move, stressing that sachet alcohol is dangerous precisely because of its low cost and availability. He warned of long-term consequences such as brain damage, cancers, anxiety, and sleep disorders, arguing that the financial and human costs of treatment far outweigh any short-term economic gains.
However, some stakeholders have raised concerns about enforcement and the potential impact on small businesses. They argue that public awareness campaigns and rehabilitation programmes should accompany the ban.
Despite these concerns, the government maintains that public health and safety remain paramount. As implementation approaches, many Nigerians hope the policy will mark a turning point toward a healthier society and a more secure future for the nation’s youth.
