(21 Feb 2019) The Venezuelan opposition's envoy to Washington DC and members of his consular team gave a news conference on Thursday to provide details around Venezuela's consular offices in the United States.
Before they could announce the first of their findings the event was interrupted by two protesters from Code Pink, an organisation working to end US military engagements abroad. They were allowed to deliver their message and leave peacefully.
"If you do that in Venezuela you can be killed," said Carlos Vecchio, the opposition's envoy to Washington DC.
"One of the reasons why I'm here is because I'm facing an order of arrest only for expressing my political ideas."
The news on the consular offices was that all eight consular offices have been closed and are no longer functional.
"Literally closed the Consulate services so we need to reopen that," said Vecchio.
"That's the message to them and also if you go to the Web page, the official web page of the former government now, you can click and pay for a service to be provided supposedly in Houston, so they are just keeping the money without providing any kind of service to them. So while we are just warning to the Venezuelans in the United States don't do it they don't do it because they won't give you the service."
Vecchio also said he believes Venezuela is 'in an irreversible process of change."
This comes after opposition leader Juan Guaido declared himself Venezuela's interim president to overthrow President Nicolas Maduro.
Maduro has deployed missiles and infantrymen to Venezuela's borders bracing for what he claims is U.S. coup plot disguised as humanitarian aid.
"I don't have any doubt that in the days to come we will have a resolution in Venezuela," said Vecchio.
"We take full control of the government this will you know helpful to accelerate the services that we can provide to the Venezuelans."
