Silver Sneakers is a health and fitness program specifically for seniors. This program includes a free gym membership at participating fitness locations, as well as exercise classes and access to certain health and wellness events.

Silver Sneakers in not covered by Original Medicare Parts A and B, but it is covered by some Medicare Advantage Plans. Medicare Advantage Plans are different from Medicare Supplement Plans. There are very few, if any, Medicare Supplement Plans that include Silver Sneakers. So, how do you know if you have a Medicare Advantage Plan or a Medicare Supplement Plan?

Everyone on Medicare has two main options on how they can receive their Medicare benefits:
1. The first option is to keep Original Medicare Parts A and B as your primary insurance, and then add on a stand alone Medicare Part D drug plan if you need prescription drug coverage. Many people that take this route also add on a Medicare Supplement Plan to cover the deductibles, co-pays and coinsurance that Original Medicare doesn’t cover. Medicare Supplement Plans are the lettered plans you may have heard of like Plan F, Plan G or Plan N. Medicare Supplement Plans usually only cover what Medicare covers and they usually don’t include Silver Sneakers.
2. The other option that Medicare beneficiaries have is to get their health benefits through a Medicare Advantage Plan, or Part C of Medicare. These plans are not Original Medicare, but you do have to be enrolled in Medicare A and B, and paying your Part B premium to be eligible. Medicare Advantage Plans are HMO or PPO Managed care plans. These plans are funded by the government and administered by private health insurance companies. With Medicare Advantage Plans, you still pay co-pays and coinsurance for most medical services, and your out of pocket maximum is usually around $6,700/year. Medicare Advantage Plans are specific to your region. Also, Medicare Advantage Plans can have very low monthly premium costs and some plans include extra benefits, like transportation benefits, vision or dental benefits, and Silver Sneakers. Not all Medicare Advantage Plans include Silver Sneakers, but many do.
