Описание к видео From Stump to Ship: 1930 Maine Logging Film (Public Domain, National Archives, Alfred Ames)

From Stump to Ship: A 1930 Logging Film is a rare, 28-minute silent documentary capturing the traditional "long log" industry in Maine’s Machias River Valley. Filmed in 1930 by Alfred K. Ames (former Maine State Senator and Machias Lumber Company owner) and Dr. Howard Kane, this unpolished 16mm black-and-white film traces the logging process: felling trees with hand tools, hauling logs by horse-drawn sleds, daring river drives down the Machias River, milling lumber, and loading schooners for markets like New York. It offers a vivid glimpse into a labor-intensive era when logging techniques had barely changed since the 18th century.
Selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2002 for its cultural and historical significance, the film preserves the dangerous work of lumberjacks and river drivers, a profession still among America’s deadliest. The restored 1985–1986 version, funded by the Maine Humanities Council and produced by the University of Maine at Orono and Northeast Historic Film, features narration by Maine humorist Tim Sample (voiced as Ames), with editing and sound by David S. Weiss and Henry Nevison. This upload is the original public domain version from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA, ARC Identifier 13585).
