It’s one of the problems with making bold statements about anything like audio supremacy. Here’s the deal: I do professional VO. I’ve been heard all over the country and all over the world. Sound quality is everything. My microphone matters. And I would never have used a USB microphone—until now. I’ve been using Aphex professional equipment in my home recording studio for years. When I learned that Aphex has a USB mic with some of the same processing circuitry as their pro gear, it was a matter for intrigue. So I tried the mic. It was surprisingly good. In fact, it sounded so good, I was concerned I was fooling myself. So I looked for a second opinion from a guy who’s a genuine recording geek. He concurs that it sounds “pretty damn good.” So, is there a better USB microphone? You might think so. And that’s fine. But people are always asking opinions about this kind of thing. And for going on the road with a laptop and a USB mic—or for starting out in voiceover with an astonishingly good, bargain-priced microphone—it’s hard to argue with Microphone X.
