Amidst the aftershock of socio-historical upheavals in Ferguson, Missouri and Baltimore, Maryland, Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates garnered heavy media attention by intimately delving into the ‘problematic’ humanity of lived Black experience, thus undermining ‘wonderbread’ cultural nationalist narratives of American exceptionalism. And yet, what is the relation between Coates’ work and established power? Is Coates’ work relevant to the grassroots proliferation of activist formations defending Black community against neo-colonial police violence? Join us for this critical engagement with the work of our brother Ta-Nehisi Coates, particularly by focusing on questions regarding the role and responsibility of Black intellectuals contributing to public discourse about social justice.
