Trevallyn Dam was constructed between 1950 and 1955. It is a short drive from Launceston CBD and a great place for a picnic. The dam wall would look like an infinity pool when it overflows.

Some interesting information about the dam:

·        It is a concrete gravity dam – obtains strength from its’ own weight

·        It is 8.3km long

·        It covers an area of 131.5 hectares

·        It supplies water to the Trevallyn Hydro Electric power station

·        It has an Elver ladder inside the dam wall so that juvenile eels, elver, can get upstream to complete their lifecycle

·        It also has an outlet for the adult eels to get through so that they can return downstream to the salt water

 Trevallyn Hydro Electric power station took over from the Duck Reach Hydro Electric Power Station (circa 1893) in 1955.

·        The dam water is pumped via underground pipes (6.5m diameter)

·        It travels a distance of 3.2 kilometres to the power station

·        The pipes are exposed for a 200m about halfway through the tunnel

·        Travelling through this tunnel produces a fall of 130m to turn the turbines at the power station

·        From the power station, the water flows directly into the Tamar River

·        It produces 50 times more power than the Duck Reach power station used to

·        Today, it generates 4% of the Tasmania’s energy

·        With an annual generation of 492 gigawatt-hours
