In this video, I’m going to share four tips for your elementary writing block to get kids jazzed and and feeling confident with writing. These tips are perfect to help teach writing in an elementary classroom. Whether you teach 2nd grade or 5th grade, these strategies are perfect for your writing lessons.
Here are my 4 tips:
1) Start Writing Workshop with a bang! Making writing fun is actually easier than I thought it could be. Now, I always start each writing block with a choice writing warm-up activity.
2) Teach writing step-by-step: Don’t just assign writing and throw students to the writing wolves. You need to walk students step-by-step through the entire process. They need lots of modeling and instruction. Students need to see what good writing looks like and they need to see how writers think through the process.
3) Share out and celebrate: Another tips is to give students lots of opportunities to share their writing. This has multiple benefits. First of all, when students share their writing, it gives us a chance to celebrate all the hard work they put into their writing. Additionally, sharing inspires ideas. Writing inspiration comes from a variety of areas. If a student is stuck, often hearing other student’s writing will help get them back on track.
4) End your writing block with a choice writing activity: Almost as important as the writing warm-up is having a writing cool-down (a student choice writing activity at the end of a writing block). When I teach writing, I try to balance modeled and guided instruction with writing warm-ups, cool downs, and mini-writing lessons.
