I made a condenser mic (including the mic element) from wire mesh, aluminum foil, a kitchen towel spool and a lot of hot glue.

(Also solder, tape, wire, and an audio jack)

My initial back-of-the-envelope calculations suggested that the signals from this thing would be too small by four orders of magnitude.
Clearly, there was something wrong with my calculations, because this thing works.

Edit: Someone on Reddit pointed out that this is probably actually more a triboelectric microphone than a traditional condenser microphone.

Edit #2: I saw in a textbook that electret condenser mics use a piece of plastic to take advantage of its "inherent polarization" so that an external polarizing voltage is not required. This seems like it might be what's going on here.
