Andrew Curley is a professor at the University of Arizona’s School of Geography, Development & Environment. His research focuses on the “everyday incorporation of Indigenous nations into colonial economies” including fossil fuel development and water development in the western United States. In conversation with correspondent Laura Paskus, he talks about the coal extraction and water development that fueled the Southwest’s biggest cities and irrigation districts and left the Navajo Nation and other tribes with environmental impacts—and without critical water infrastructure. He also challenges myths around water scarcity and the narrative of climate catastrophe.
