James Kalm masks up, and saddles up to continue his cultural field work in the streets of Downtown Manhattan. This episode brings viewers to Allen Street and Freight+Volume for a glance at “Constellations” the latest outing by Cordy Ryman. This show features “Hall-Wave” an installation of dozens of two by fours propped against an undulating support. The rear gallery hosts clusters of small paintings, many on wood but-ends, that seem to be hayloed in the reflected color of their edges.
Continuing south, cultural explorers will be shepherded to “Other Matters” with works by Sophie Larrimore and Jerry the Marble Faun at Situations on Henry Street. These two artists seem to be united in their retreat to primordial imagery. Jerry the Marble Faun carves directly in Italian limestone, and alabaster, bringing forth Gothic or Romanesque beings and forms that shade into Surrealism. Sophie Larrimore uses a palette of bright magenta, mauve, and aqua to model fecund female figures accompanied by oversized poodles that echo Art Deco filtered through Mayan sculpture.
