This lecture is part of a series on advanced differential equations: asymptotics & perturbations. This lecture explores pattern forming systems and their instabilities. In this lecture, focus is given to modal analysis of patio-temporal systems, which is inherently a linear analysis for the leading order dynamics. Multiple scales expansions shows how mode coupling can occur due to forcing, nonlinearity and/or non-orthogonal modes.
