Описание к видео The Billion Dollar Spy: How One Soviet Engineer Nearly Changed the Cold War

Adolf Tolkachev was the most valuable spy in CIA history — until American traitors sold him out.

In 1977, a Soviet aviation engineer began one of the most daring espionage operations of the Cold War. For eight years, Adolf Tolkachev photographed thousands of classified documents from inside Moscow's most secret military research institutes, giving America a decisive advantage in the technological arms race.

His intelligence on Soviet fighter radar systems, electronic warfare capabilities, and aviation technology saved the U.S. billions in research costs and shaped American military superiority for decades. Pentagon officials called him irreplaceable. President Reagan was personally briefed on his contributions.

But in 1985, everything collapsed — not because Tolkachev made mistakes, but because CIA officers Aldrich Ames and Edward Lee Howard betrayed him to the KGB for money.

This is the story of extraordinary courage, devastating betrayal, and the human cost of Cold War espionage.
