“5500-km Range, 10 Times Faster Than Sound…” Why Putin’s New Oreshnik Missile Is a Threat to Europe

Russia’s mystery weapon, “Oreshnik” hypersonic intermediate-range ballistic missile, has likely spooked the West after Moscow fired it at Dnipro, Ukraine. The US National Security Council said that Russia launched “an experimental medium-range ballistic missile against Ukraine”. The attack reportedly marked the first time that such a missile was used in the war or in any conflict. Russian President President described Oreshnik as a new, intermediate-range ballistic missile that raced to its target at 10 times the speed of sound. Putin claimed “modern air defence systems… and anti-missile defences created by the Americans in Europe can’t intercept such missiles.”
