Elk are the second largest members of the deer family, after moose. They have a sturdy build, with strong legs and a muscular body. Elk are social animals and live in herds, with separate herds for males and females. The males, or bulls, form bachelor groups outside the mating season, while the females, or cows, and their offspring stay together. During the breeding season, known as the rut, bulls engage in fierce battles to establish dominance and win the attention of the females.
