Since Matheran is a no-vehicle zone, you can only drive up to Dasturi Naka, which is the last point accessible by private vehicles. From there, you'll need to continue by foot, horseback, or hand-pulled rickshaw.

By Train (Recommended & Most Popular):

Mumbai to Neral: Take a local train from Mumbai (CST, Dadar, or Kurla) on the Central Line to Neral Station. This is the most convenient and economical way to reach Neral. The journey takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.


Neral to Matheran (Toy Train): From Neral, you have two options:


Shared Taxis/Cabs: If the toy train is not operating (e.g., during heavy monsoon) or you prefer a faster option, shared taxis or private cabs are available from Neral station to Dasturi Naka.


By Road (Car/Bus):


Mumbai to Dasturi Naka: You can drive your own car or hire a taxi directly from Mumbai to Dasturi Naka. The road journey is fairly straightforward. There's a parking fee at Dasturi Naka.


From Dasturi Naka to Matheran: As mentioned, no vehicles are allowed beyond Dasturi Naka. From here, you'll need to cover the remaining distance (approx. 2.5-3 km) by:
