A Qatar Court on October 26 passed a verdict of the death penalty for the eight former Indian naval officers. The Naval officers imprisoned in Qatar since October 2022, were accused of allegedly spying on a submarine programme. India’s Ministry of External Affairs said it is "deeply shocked" by the verdict and now awaits the detailed judgement. However, back in December 2022, EAM Dr S Jaishankar highlighted the Qatar issue in the Parliament. During his Rajya Sabha address, India’s favourite diplomat assured to resolve the matter on priority. The eight Indian nationals have been imprisoned in Qatar since October 2022 and were accused of allegedly spying on a submarine programme. New Delhi had been granted consular access to the eight Indians and had been working to secure their release. The Indian nationals had their first trial in late March.
